What is the Nedbank Gold Credit Card?

Nedbank Gold is the bank's entry-level credit card, sitting below Platinum and the American Express Platinum tier. It pairs a low monthly fee with the Greenbacks rewards programme, and is unusual in offering a choice between Mastercard and American Express networks at the same income tier.

The Amex variant earns double the Greenbacks per Rand spent (4 GB per R10 vs 2 GB per R10 on Mastercard) and has no monthly earn cap — making it a strong pick for higher spenders. Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Spar and Checkers all accept Amex in South Africa, despite Amex's narrower-acceptance global reputation.

The trade-off is that Greenbacks have the lowest redemption value of any SA bank reward currency (GB1 ≈ R0.028). The earn rate ceiling of 2% on Amex is competitive, but the per-point value is not.

Interest rate and the NCA cap

Nedbank Gold publishes a personalised rate around 20.75% per annum, well above some competitors' floors. The Platinum tier has more headroom, with a published range of 10.25–20.75%. American Express Platinum sits at 18.00%; Private Clients can access 10.25–17.75%.

The NCA legal maximum in 2026 is 24.85% per annum — (repo × 2.2) + 10% at the current 6.75% repo rate. Cash advances accrue interest from day one and attract an additional withdrawal fee.

Frequently asked questions

Has Nedbank renamed the Green Credit Card to Gold? +
Yes — Nedbank rebranded the Green/Greenback Credit Card as the Nedbank Gold Credit Card. The current 2026 product range on personal.nedbank.co.za lists Gold, Platinum, American Express Gold, American Express Platinum and SAA Voyager variants — but no "Green". Existing Green cardholders' accounts continue to operate under the Gold branding; new applicants apply for Gold.
What is the Nedbank Gold Credit Card monthly fee in 2026? +
Standalone Gold is R40/month for the maintenance fee. Total monthly cost depends on whether you add optional Greenbacks linkage (R32–R35) and the credit facility fee (R20–R23). Bundled with the MiGoals Premium account, total monthly is around R65.
Should I get the Mastercard or Amex variant? +
Amex earns 4 Greenbacks per R10 vs Mastercard's 2 GB per R10 — double the rate. Amex has no monthly earn cap; Mastercard caps at R20,000. The catch: Amex is accepted at fewer SA merchants than Visa/Mastercard, though acceptance is materially better than the international stereotype — Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Spar, Checkers and 100,000+ SA merchants take Amex.
What partners does Greenbacks have? +
BP fuel (25c cashback per litre), Nu Metro (up to 50–60% off movies and combos), Apple and Samsung (up to 10% off devices), Greenbacks Travel (up to 30% off flights, up to 80% at Level 5 with Booster). Pick n Pay and Engen are not Greenbacks partners (those belong to other banks' programmes).
How do Greenbacks Levels work? +
Five levels, climbed by main-banking with Nedbank (salary into a Nedbank account, multiple products, digital-channel use). Level 5 earns 2% cashback equivalent on Amex and 1% on Mastercard. A "Booster" level above 5 requires very heavy digital engagement and main-banked status — primarily for Private Wealth clients.
What's the difference between Nedbank Gold, Platinum and Amex Platinum? +
Gold: R5k income, R40/mo standalone, no free lounge, optional travel insurance, 55-day interest-free. Platinum: ~R25k income, R110/mo, 12 free Bidvest visits/year, R3m travel insurance, R4m medical cover, International SOS. Amex Platinum: R62,500 income, R535/mo, 30,000 welcome Membership Rewards points, 1.5× accelerated points, unlimited global lounge access.
