MSDS β€” entry path

The Military Skills Development System is the standard entry route for the SANDF. Two-year contract for South Africans aged 18–22 (or 26 with a degree).

  • Training stipend: approximately R8,000–R10,000/month
  • Accommodation, meals, uniforms and medical fully covered
  • On successful completion: permanent contract at SL4 (Rifleman) or higher

How much does a soldier earn in the SANDF?+
Entry-level Privates earn from around R196,000 per year (~R16,300/month) on salary level 4 of the DPSA pay scales. Allowances for risk, deployment and danger can add 15–30% on top.
How much does the SA Army pay during MSDS basic training?+
Military Skills Development System recruits earn around R8,000–R10,000 per month during their 24-month contract, with accommodation, meals and uniforms provided.
Do SANDF members get a pension?+
Yes. SANDF members contribute to the GEPF (Government Employees Pension Fund), one of the largest pension funds in Africa.
What allowances do SANDF members receive?+
On top of the basic salary, members typically receive housing allowance, danger pay during deployment, family travel, free medical care via SAMHS, and uniform allowances.
