Mafori Finance Loans 2026 Review (Now Mafori Group)

Mafori Finance has restructured as Mafori Group, a Pretoria-headquartered financial-services group with 11 branches. Its loans division offers unsecured loans of R500 to R17,500 over 3 to 12 months, with feedback in 24–48 hours. Two things you must know before applying: no interest rates or fees are published anywhere on its websites, and no NCR registration number is displayed - verify both before you borrow.

Updated By James Pretorius Fact-checked

Do this before applying: Mafori does not publish its NCR credit-provider (NCRCP) number on maforigroup.co.za or its related sites, and we could not find one via search. That does not necessarily mean it is unregistered - but you should never borrow from any lender whose registration you have not confirmed yourself. Check the register at ncr.org.za or call the NCR on 0860 627 627. If you cannot confirm registration, do not apply - credit from an unregistered provider falls outside the NCA's consumer protections.

Is Mafori still operating? Yes - as Mafori Group

You may see claims online that Mafori Finance "no longer appears to be operating in South Africa". Those claims are outdated: they are based on the old mafori.co.za website going unresponsive. In fact, mafori.co.za now permanently redirects to maforigroup.co.za, where the business presents itself as an integrated financial-services group - with a live branch list, working phone numbers and an active credit division taking applications.

So Mafori has not disappeared; it has rebranded and broadened. The group says it has operated since 1998, and alongside lending it now markets credit repair, housing finance, insurance brokerage, and medical and education finance. That pivot matters for borrowers: the loans arm is one division of a wider group whose most prominent marketing is credit-repair services.

What Mafori offers

  • Unsecured personal and emergency loans of R500 to R17,500 - no collateral required.
  • Repayment over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, in monthly instalments.
  • Feedback in as little as 24–48 hours after applying, per its credit pages. (One services page advertises same-day approval; the credit pages' 24–48-hour wording is the one to plan around.)
  • Apply by phone, WhatsApp, email, callback request or in branch - there is no self-service online loan application.

A note on the maximum amount: Mafori's homepage advertises loans of up to R30,000, but three of its own product pages all state a maximum of R17,500. The discrepancy is unexplained on the site. We use R17,500 - the figure the actual product pages carry - and recommend you get any offer above that confirmed in writing before relying on it.

Interest rates and fees: not published

This is the biggest gap in Mafori's offer. As at July 2026, no interest rate, initiation fee, service fee or credit-life premium appears anywhere on maforigroup.co.za's homepage, credit pages, services page or contact page. The only pricing language is that rates are "competitive and in accordance with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) guidelines". Rate figures you may find on third-party comparison sites are stale, contradict the live site, and should be ignored.

A lender not publishing prices is not illegal, but it removes your ability to comparison-shop before handing over personal information. Protect yourself:

  • Demand a written quotation before signing: the interest rate, initiation fee, monthly service fee, credit-life premium and the total amount you will repay over the full term.
  • Check it against the NCA caps. As at July 2026 unsecured personal loan interest is capped at 28.00% a year; small loans of R8,000 or less over 6 months or less may instead be priced as short-term credit at up to 5% per month. A quote above the applicable cap is a red flag - walk away and report it to the NCR.
  • Compare the same amount and term against lenders that do publish their pricing before you commit.

Who qualifies and how to apply

Mafori's qualifying criteria, per its credit pages:

  • 18 years or older;
  • South African citizen or permanent resident with valid SA identification;
  • Proof of employment and income for at least the last 3 months;
  • An active bank account.

Applications go through Mafori's contact channels - phone 086 162 3674 (086 1 MAFORI) or 010 020 0299, WhatsApp, email ([email protected]), a website callback request, or any branch. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00–17:00.

Branch network (11): Pretoria Central (225 Pretorius Street), Centurion (Lougardia Building, 1262 Embankment Road), Mokopane, Thohoyandou, Polokwane, Tzaneen, Witbank, Groblersdal, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Kroonstad. Head office: Agri-hub Office Park, Witherite Street, The Willows, Pretoria.

Beyond loans: the Mafori Group divisions

Mafori Group's services page and homepage list several divisions alongside credit: credit repair (removal of defaults, judgments and blacklistings, debt clearance and reckless-lending defence), affordable housing finance, insurance brokerage (funeral schemes and short-term cover), and medical and education finance (including tuition and student-accommodation loans).

The heavy credit-repair emphasis tells you who Mafori serves: consumers with damaged credit records. If that is you, be deliberate - a business that both lends to you and sells you credit repair has an incentive to market both. Evaluate the loan and any credit-repair offer separately, and read our guide on what "blacklisted" really means before paying anyone to fix your record.

Safer-bet alternatives for credit-impaired borrowers

If you have a thin file or a damaged credit record, compare regulated lenders with published pricing first:

  • African Bank - a regulated bank that lends across a wide credit spectrum and publishes its rate range upfront.
  • Capitec - its Credit Builder product is designed for thin-file applicants building a first bureau record.
  • Bayport - specialist consolidation lender with a published NCR registration.
  • The NCR itself - if you are struggling with existing debt, the regulator (0860 627 627) can refer you to a registered debt counsellor before you take on more credit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mafori Finance still operating? +
Yes. Claims on some comparison sites that Mafori "no longer appears to be operating" are outdated - they rest on the old mafori.co.za website going quiet. That domain now permanently redirects to maforigroup.co.za, where the business trades as Mafori Group with a live 11-branch network, working phone lines (086 162 3674 / 010 020 0299) and an active loans division. Mafori is operating; it has restructured and rebranded.
How much can I borrow from Mafori? +
Mafori's credit pages advertise unsecured personal and emergency loans from R500 up to R17,500, repayable over 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, with no collateral required. Note an inconsistency on Mafori's own websites: the homepage claims a maximum of R30,000, while three separate product pages all state R17,500. Treat R17,500 as the working maximum and confirm your actual offer in writing.
What interest rate does Mafori charge? +
Unknown - and that is the honest answer. No interest rate, initiation fee, service fee or credit-life premium is published anywhere on maforigroup.co.za or its related sites; the only wording offered is that pricing is "competitive and in accordance with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) guidelines". Ignore rate figures on third-party sites - they are stale and contradict the live site. Before signing anything, insist on a written quotation showing the interest rate, all fees and the total amount repayable. For context, the NCA caps unsecured personal loan interest at 28.00% a year as at July 2026.
Is Mafori registered with the NCR? +
We could not verify this either way. No NCR credit-provider (NCRCP) number is displayed on maforigroup.co.za or its application-related sites, and searches surface none. That does not prove Mafori is unregistered - but you should confirm before borrowing: search the register at ncr.org.za or call the NCR on 0860 627 627. If you cannot confirm a lender's registration, do not borrow from it.
Who qualifies for a Mafori loan? +
Per Mafori's credit pages: you must be 18 or older, a South African citizen or permanent resident with valid SA identification, have proof of employment and income covering at least the last 3 months, and hold an active bank account.
How long does Mafori take to approve a loan? +
Mafori's credit pages say you will receive feedback in as little as 24–48 hours. One of its services pages advertises "same-day approval", but that conflicts with the credit pages' own wording - plan around 24–48 hours, not same-day money.
Where are Mafori's branches? +
Eleven branches: Pretoria Central, Centurion, Mokopane, Thohoyandou, Polokwane, Tzaneen, Witbank, Groblersdal, Bloemfontein, Kimberley and Kroonstad, with the head office at Agri-hub Office Park, The Willows, Pretoria. You can also reach Mafori by phone (086 162 3674 or 010 020 0299), WhatsApp, email ([email protected]) or a callback request, Monday to Friday 08:00–17:00.
What else does Mafori Group do besides loans? +
The group - which says it has operated since 1998 - spans several divisions: credit repair (removal of defaults, judgments and blacklistings, debt clearance, reckless-lending defence), affordable housing finance, insurance brokerage (funeral and short-term), and medical and education finance. Be aware that a lender marketing credit-repair services to the same customers it lends to may pitch you both products; assess each on its own merits and cost.
