Frequently asked questions

What is the Absa personal loan interest rate in 2026? +
Absa publishes a "from" rate of 13.75% per annum on its standard Personal Loan landing page. Your personalised rate falls between 13.75% and Absa's published ceiling of approximately 27.75%, depending on your credit score, income and existing debts. The NCA legal cap on unsecured loans is 34.85% — Absa prices conservatively below the ceiling.
How long is the maximum Absa personal loan term? +
Up to 84 months (7 years) on the standard Personal Loan and Switch & Save Consolidation Loan. This is the longest term offered by any SA bank, tied with Nedbank and Capitec. The longer term lowers your monthly instalment but increases total interest paid — only choose 84 months if you genuinely cannot afford a shorter term.
What is Absa's "Switch & Save" Consolidation Loan? +
A debt consolidation loan that settles your existing creditors directly and replaces them with a single Absa monthly instalment. Amounts R15,000 to R350,000, terms 12 to 84 months. Same NCA-capped fees and same personalised rate band as the standard personal loan. Useful when the consolidation rate is lower than your weighted-average existing debt rate.
Does Absa offer small short-term loans? +
Yes — uniquely among the big four. Absa Express Loan (R1,500–R8,000 over 1–6 months) and Absa Instant Loan (R350–R8,000 over up to 35 days) cover the short-term space that FNB, Standard Bank and Nedbank largely cede to fintechs like Wonga and Lulalend. Note these fall under the NCA "short-term credit" category which allows up to 5% per month interest — meaningfully more expensive than the standard personal loan.
Is Absa credit life insurance compulsory? +
Yes — Absa requires you to take a Credit Protection Plan (CPP) on all personal loans. Cover includes death, permanent and temporary disability, critical illness, terminal illness, and retrenchment/loss of income. Premium is capped at R4.50 per R1,000 outstanding monthly per NCA Regulation 3. You have the right to substitute your existing equivalent policy within 30 days of opening.
Can I get a preferential rate as an Absa Premium or Private Bank client? +
Likely — but Absa does not publish a specific differential. Premier Banking and Private Banking clients typically negotiate preferential personalised rates on personal loans (and other credit facilities). Existing transactional accounts with Absa improve your personalised pricing because Absa sees your income flow directly.
