SASSA Appeal: How to Reconsider a Declined Application

Declined unfairly? You have 90 days to lodge a reconsideration. Here's the exact process, the evidence that actually moves the needle, and what to expect on timelines.

Updated May 2026 β€’ By Thandi Mokoena β€’ Fact-checked

90-day deadline

The clock starts on the date you were declined β€” not the date you found out. Submit early to allow time for SASSA to request more evidence.

Step-by-step (SRD reconsideration)

  1. 1

    Read your decline reason carefully

Different reasons need different evidence. "Means test failed" needs a bank statement. "Identity verification" needs a Home Affairs visit. Don't appeal blindly.

  2. 2

    Gather your evidence

For the month you're appealing: 3-month bank statement showing inflows below R624; UIF non-payment letter (if "UIF registered"); NSFAS termination letter (if "NSFAS registered"); SARS statement (if "Alternative income source").

  3. 3

    Go to srd.sassa.gov.za

Click "Submit Reconsideration Request" on the homepage menu.

  4. 4

    Verify your identity

Enter your 13-digit ID and the cellphone linked to your application. Confirm the OTP.

  5. 5

    Pick the month and reason

You appeal one month at a time. Choose the relevant decline reason from the dropdown.

  6. 6

    Upload supporting documents

PDF or clear photo. Maximum 5MB per file.

  7. 7

    Submit and screenshot

Take a screenshot of the case reference number. You'll need it to follow up.

What evidence actually works

Strong evidence

  • β€’ 3-month full bank statement (stamped or via banking app PDF)
  • β€’ UIF non-payment confirmation from Department of Labour
  • β€’ NSFAS funding-end letter (with date)
  • β€’ Retrenchment letter from former employer
  • β€’ Affidavit confirming no income (commissioner of oaths)

Won't move the needle

  • β€’ "I really need the money" letters
  • β€’ Screenshots of empty Capitec or Tyme apps without statements
  • β€’ WhatsApp messages from family members
  • β€’ Photos of medical conditions (use the Disability Grant instead)

If your appeal is also declined

Non-SRD grant decisions can be escalated to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) within 90 days of the second decline.
