Capfin Loan Review
What a Capfin loan actually costs once interest, the initiation fee, the monthly service fee and credit life insurance are added up - and who it genuinely suits.
Is a Capfin loan worth it?
Capfin lends R1,000 to R50,000 over 6, 12 or 24 months and is a registered credit provider backed by Sanlam. Its real advantage is access: you can apply in any PEP or Ackermans store, or by SMS, without data or a smartphone. You need permanent employment and 3 months of payslips, so it does not serve the self-employed or grant recipients.

Why the interest rate is only half the story
On a small, short loan the fixed charges matter more than the interest rate. A R5,000 loan over 6 months carries the same R69 monthly service fee as a R50,000 loan, and the initiation fee is charged upfront regardless. That is why the effective annual cost on a small short-term loan can exceed 60% even when the quoted interest rate is within the 28.00% legal cap. Borrow over the shortest term you can genuinely afford, but check the total cost, not the instalment.
Pros and cons
What works
- +Apply in person at any PEP or Ackermans store, which matters if you have no data or bank app
- +SMS application route (33005) works on any phone, no smartphone needed
- +Fixed instalments for the full term, so the repayment never changes
- +Backed by Sanlam, a large regulated financial services group
- +Funds paid out within 48 hours of approval
What to watch
- βRequires permanent employment and 3 months of payslips or bank statements
- βNo option for the self-employed, informally employed or SASSA grant recipients
- βRate is not published upfront - you only see your cost after a credit assessment
- βCredit life insurance is bundled, adding to the monthly cost
- βShort terms mean high monthly instalments relative to the amount borrowed
Who qualifies
- South African ID document, and you must be 18 or older
- Permanent employment (contract and informal work is normally declined)
- Your latest 3 months of payslips or bank statements
- A South African bank account in your own name
- A working cellphone number for OTP verification
If you are self-employed, on a SASSA grant, or working informally, Capfin is not an option. See our guides to loans without a payslip and loans for pensioners instead.
Three ways to apply
Online
Complete the application at capfin.co.za and upload your payslips or statements.
SMS
Send your ID number to 33005 and Capfin calls you back to complete the application.
In store
Visit any PEP or Ackermans store with your ID and payslips - staff capture it for you.
Never pay a fee to get a loan
Capfin never asks for an upfront payment to release a loan. If a site or a WhatsApp contact asks you to pay an "insurance", "clearance" or "activation" fee before payout, it is a scam. Legitimate lenders deduct fees from the loan, never before it.
Apply only via capfin.co.za, the SMS line 33005, or in a PEP or Ackermans store. You can verify any credit provider on the National Credit Regulator register at ncr.org.za.
Our verdict
Capfin's real strength is reach rather than price. Being able to walk into a PEP store and apply without data, a smartphone or a branch visit genuinely matters for a large share of South African borrowers, and being part of the Sanlam group means you are dealing with a properly regulated lender.
The trade-off is cost and eligibility. Pricing is not published upfront, credit life is bundled in, and the strict payslip requirement excludes exactly the informally employed borrowers who most often go looking for this kind of credit. If you are permanently employed and can compare offers, check a bank first - Capitec, Nedbank and African Bank frequently price below the NCA cap for salaried applicants.
Use Capfin when access is the deciding factor. Use a bank when price is.
