Most Valuable South African Stamps 2026
Cape Triangulars get all the headlines, but the real six-figure rarities are Union-era printing errors. Here's what your old SA stamps might actually be worth — and which ones aren't worth what WhatsApp says.
Reality check
Almost every "I have a R500,000 stamp in my grandfather's album" story turns out to be either a common issue (R5–R50 value), a damaged version of a rare stamp (90% loss of catalogue value), or a 20th-century reprint. Get any stamp valued at over R1,000 expertised before you celebrate.
2026 value guide
| Stamp | Period | Typical value (good condition) |
|---|---|---|
Cape of Good Hope "Postage One Penny" Triangular (1853) The world's first triangular stamps. Issued in red, blue and other shades; condition and shade variants matter enormously. | Cape Colony | R40,000 – R120,000 |
Cape Triangular "Woodblock" (1861) Crude local printing during a stamp shortage. Errors of colour (the "blue 1d" and "red 4d") are six-figure rarities. | Cape Colony | R150,000 – R900,000 |
Transvaal First Issue (1869) ZAR republic's first stamps. Higher denominations and overprint variants are rare and command premiums. | Transvaal | R12,000 – R150,000 |
Mafeking Siege Issue (1900) Locally produced during the Siege of Mafeking. The "Baden-Powell" portrait stamps are the most sought-after. | Boer War | R8,000 – R100,000+ |
Union of South Africa ½d King's Head Double Print Listed SG 3a. From a vertical strip of six with varying frame doubling. | 1913–1924 | R30,000+ |
Union 10/- King's Head Inverted Watermark (SG 15w) Only a handful of mint and used copies known. | 1913–1924 | R65,000+ |
Union 10/- Inverted Centre (SG 39a, 1927–1930) Two vertical pairs and a marginal single recorded. One of the great Union rarities. | Union | R400,000+ |
Union 3d Frame Omitted (SG 45f, 1930–1944) One block of eight known with five total and three partial omissions. | Union | R300,000+ |
Union 3d Centre Omitted (SG 45e, 1930–1944) Only three known examples with total centre omissions. | Union | R600,000+ |
RSA 1963 Red Cross Omitted (SG 226a) Roughly 22 known copies from two sheets. A relatively accessible modern rarity. | RSA modern | R55,000 – R75,000 |
RSA 1964 Nursing Gold Omitted (SG 257a) About 25 possible omissions across the sheet. Recent auction prices reaching R165k. | RSA modern | R165,000+ |
RSA 2014 Embroidery Embossing Omitted A single recorded example. No established trading history yet — would set the price at auction. | RSA modern | Auction-only |
Prices are 2026 catalogue / auction estimates in good condition. Damaged stamps lose 70–95% of catalogue value. Source: Stanley Gibbons SACC, South African Collector "Ten Rarest", recent Spink and Sandafayre auction realisations.

Where to value and sell SA stamps
Local — for valuation
Philatelic Foundation of Southern Africa

Local — auction
Stephan Welz & Co, AuctionWorld
Run regular philatelic sales. 10–18% buyer's premium, similar seller commission.

Spink, Sandafayre, David Feldman
For SA stamps with international demand (Cape Triangulars, Union errors). Higher visibility, higher hammer prices.
For lower-value bulk
Reputable dealers and online platforms
A general album of post-Union RSA issues is typically worth R5–R500 across the lot. Don't over-invest in cataloguing it.
Practical tips before you sell
- · Never clean a stamp. Even gentle washing destroys value.
- · Don't remove stamps from envelopes. A used stamp on its original cover ("entire") is often worth more than the stamp alone.
- · Get expert certification on anything claimed to be worth over R5,000. British Philatelic Association or RPSL certificates double buyer confidence.
- · Photograph the perforations and watermark. Stamp variants worth wildly different amounts often differ only in tiny perf or watermark details.
- · Beware of "common" stamp myths. 1950s–1990s RSA pictorial issues are mostly worth R5–R20 each, regardless of how attractive they look.
