Most Valuable South African Stamps 2026

Cape Triangulars get all the headlines, but the real six-figure rarities are Union-era printing errors. Here's what your old SA stamps might actually be worth — and which ones aren't worth what WhatsApp says.

Reality check

Almost every "I have a R500,000 stamp in my grandfather's album" story turns out to be either a common issue (R5–R50 value), a damaged version of a rare stamp (90% loss of catalogue value), or a 20th-century reprint. Get any stamp valued at over R1,000 expertised before you celebrate.

Stamp condition is graded similarly to coins. The differences move value by 10× or more.

Where to value and sell SA stamps

Local — for valuation

Philatelic Foundation of Southern Africa

Offers expertising and certification. Worth the fee for anything over R5,000.

Local — auction

Stephan Welz & Co, AuctionWorld

Run regular philatelic sales. 10–18% buyer's premium, similar seller commission.

International — best for rarities

Spink, Sandafayre, David Feldman

For SA stamps with international demand (Cape Triangulars, Union errors). Higher visibility, higher hammer prices.

For lower-value bulk

Reputable dealers and online platforms

A general album of post-Union RSA issues is typically worth R5–R500 across the lot. Don't over-invest in cataloguing it.

Practical tips before you sell

  • · Never clean a stamp. Even gentle washing destroys value.
  • · Don't remove stamps from envelopes. A used stamp on its original cover ("entire") is often worth more than the stamp alone.
  • · Get expert certification on anything claimed to be worth over R5,000. British Philatelic Association or RPSL certificates double buyer confidence.
  • · Photograph the perforations and watermark. Stamp variants worth wildly different amounts often differ only in tiny perf or watermark details.
  • · Beware of "common" stamp myths. 1950s–1990s RSA pictorial issues are mostly worth R5–R20 each, regardless of how attractive they look.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most valuable South African stamp?+
In terms of catalogued value, the Union of South Africa "10 shilling Inverted Centre" (SG 39a, 1927–1930) and the 3d Centre Omitted (SG 45e) are the highest at R400k–R600k+ each, with only a handful of recorded examples. Cape Triangulars are the most famous, but Union-era errors are the rarest.
Are Cape Triangulars valuable?+
Yes, but the range is wide. A common used 1d Triangular in fine condition is around R40,000–R60,000. The "Woodblock" 1861 emergency printings and inverted-colour errors can fetch R300,000–R900,000+ at international auction.
How do I know if my stamps are worth anything?+
Three things matter: catalogue identification (which exact issue, watermark, perforation), condition (mint vs used, gum, no thinning), and demand (popularity of the issue with collectors). Bring stamps to a Philatelic Federation of South Africa (PFSA) accredited dealer for valuation.
Where can I get South African stamps valued or sold?+
In SA: Philatelic Foundation of Southern Africa, Stephan Welz auctions, AuctionWorld, Cape Town Philatelic Auctioneers. Internationally: Sandafayre (UK), Spink (UK), David Feldman (Geneva). Always get a second opinion on any stamp valued above R10,000.
What's "SG" and why do dealers use it?+
Stanley Gibbons — the British publisher of the world's most widely-used stamp catalogue. SG numbers are the universal language of stamp identification. The SACC (Stanley Gibbons Stamps of South Africa Catalogue) is the specific South African reference.
Should I clean or repair an old stamp before selling?+
No — exactly like coins, never clean or repair. Cleaning destroys gum and value. Even removing a stamp from a hinge or album corner can halve its value. Bring it to a dealer in the condition you found it.
How can I spot a fake?+
Common red flags: perfect centring on an issue known for poor centring, regummed backs, faked overprints (especially on Boer War siege issues), pin-perforations on what should be machine-perforated stamps. For anything over R5,000 in claimed value, get expert certification from the British Philatelic Association or RPSL.
