In 2021, he was linked to the asbestos scandal in South Africa.
Sodi, alongside 10 others, was charged with money laundering, corruption, multiple counts of fraud, and violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act concerning an R255 million rands project to get rid of asbestos roofing material in Free State.
The businessman was awarded, through his company, an R255 million tender alongside Ignatius Mpambani (deceased). The scope was to assess the number of houses with asbestos roofs in the Free State and report back to the department of housing in the province. However, allegedly, a series of events took place and the cost of the tender shot up to close to R1 billion.
The tender was then flagged, and investigations were carried out. The investigations showed irregularities in the tender handling process. Edwin was arrested alongside his co-accused. His cars were seized by the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU). However, he was later released at an R500,000 cash bail.
